Exploration Framework Atlas Series

NEW EDITIONS: 1) Colombia, February 2009; 2) Central Andes, March 2009

Since 1982 our tectonic and paleogeographic models have radically changed the way explorationists and geologists have viewed the evolution of the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean and northern South America.

Our latest systhesis is now available as a series of Exploration Framework Atlases which provide a solid and comprehensive framework in which to quickly and confidently assess basins in frontier areas, set within a rigorous plate kinematic framework. The Atlases are highly condensed, information-heavy and user-friendly. All are transmitted on CD-ROM. Georeferenced maps, geotiffs and shapefiles are available for selected atlases.

Atlases available: Colombia, Venezuela, Central Andes, Gulf of Mexico.

What are these Atlases and what do they do?

  • Excellent tools for understanding the geologic setting and petroleum geology of basins and sub-basins
  • Detailed paleogeographic maps include new information on age and paleoenvironments for many key formations
  • Fill the wide gap between generalized tectonic models and detailed basin-scale or country data compilations, as a careful synthesis of models and data
  • These atlases differ from other regional integrative reports through their unique use of detailed palinspastic paleogeographic maps to present the models and data in a visually compelling fashion
  • Rigorous integration of tectonics, sedimentology, stratigraphy, and structure, produces a clear, compelling story of the geologic evolution of Latin American and Caribbean basins
  • We present a wide-ranging discussion of tectonic history, plate-tectonic models, and the constraints on these models
  • The Atlases come with large amount of background and supporting material (published papers, posters, supplementary data including stratigraphic and sedimentologic details, new measured sections, biostratigraphic analyses, thin-section descriptions, bibliographies)
  • They are the result of over 50 man-years of effort, still ongoing, in all these areas
  • Data sources include our own sedimentological and structural field studies, cross-sections, sedimentary-provenance analyses, revised correlations, fission-track and isotopic dating, plate-motion data analysis, core-logging, industry seismic and well data
  • They benefit from many years of interaction with, and feedback from, industry clients

What they are not!

  • Uncritical compilations from published scientific literature and public-domain datasets

Why do you need these atlases?

  • They provide an integrated framework for understanding your E&P areas of interest
  • They are concise but comprehensive volumes, designed to be user-friendly
  • The Atlases are directly useful to managers, geoscientists and engineers, and new team members
  • Our Atlases are being used for exploration planning, reevaluation of acreage, planning country strategy and new-country entry
  • The level of detail is sufficient to spark the recognition of new plays and trends
  • They are great resources for focused learning, familiarization, and presentation preparation

Why are these Atlases so cost-effective?

  • Contains the synthesis of many years of experience from a team of specialists (plate tectonics, structural geology, seismic interpretation, sedimentology, paleontology, hydrocarbon systems)
  • Each volume represents 10 man-years or more of direct effort, offered at a fraction of the cost of independently creating the models, maps, and data in-house
  • As such, they act as a tremendous launch-pad for in house studies and prospect evaluations
  • The authors are also available for quick-start short-courses and consulting on atlas focus areas

Our methodology:

  • Identify major tectonic elements, establish constraints imposed by regional plate-motion history
  • Integrate large-scale models with regional- and field-scale geology, thus testing the models
  • Create palinspastic reconstructions accounting for shortening, strike-slip, and Mesozoic back-arc extension
  • Overlay detailed formation-level paleogeography on the palinspastic base
  • The combination of paleogeography and tectonic reconstruction is a powerful predictive tool, useful for hydrocarbon exploration and production studies
  • We also draw on geologic literature and maps, theses, seismic data, LANDSAT and radar images
